It's my Theory.

Excerpt from a conversation I had a with an old friend this evening. It's high time to formally put it down. Expect amendments at a time when my brain hasn't full of partial sums.

"It's different for every woman. But you know that thing guys like to say about women liking assholes? I have a theory about that.

This, I could write a book about. I might someday. Who knows. I'm still doing research =P

At any rate, the theory goes like this:

Our generation has the unfortunate fate of growing up with generally crappy models of manhood and womanhood. The media alone does enough damage. But then you consider our parent's divorce rates, the feminist movement, the me-generation: Basically, we've been screwed out of good role-models.

And I'm not saying there aren't exceptions, but generally speaking)

So, here we are, twenty-somethings, and we've got a generation of women who think that the only way a man can lead an dominate is to act like a jerk and the only way to get that man is to whore yourself out

AND

we have young men who are, as my friend Eric likes to say, gun-shy: they don't know HOW to approach women or what they really need, because it was never illustrated to them.

Because, contrary to belief, the emotional support trumps the sex and money."

  1. Is your theory that divorce, feminism and yuppy-hood have severely accessed the amount of good role models 20 somethings have access to?

    I don't think it's so much a theory but a fact.

    Divorce damages kids: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Implications_of_divorce

Feminism has put men in a double bind (but it's worth the price of equality): "The Hearts of Men: American Dreams and the Flight from Commitment" By Barbara Ehrenreich

Yuppies: "You're talking about a class of people who put off having families so they can make payments on the BMWs ..."

As far as your pal, Eric, goes, I'd say a summer in Italy will provide him with ample examples of men approaching women, and yes, women approaching men, especially in the north. Italians have a very chatty and social culture.

  3. Barce,

Thanks for your opinion. It's a theory that's still in very general form, and, as you can see by the timestamp, posted very early in the morning when I didn't have to time to think about the ins and outs. I have every plan of writing a second blog and making amendments.

As for the comment: I think Eric was talking about American men, and, to define further, I think he was talking about your typical non-jerk who DOES want a wife and kids...but has no clue to go about it or is too afraid to, going back to the reasons you listed above.
